比較の組み立て
Comedy is true to one side of life. 『喜劇は真実である。人生の一面において』
Tragedy is true to another side of life. 『悲劇は真実である。人生のもう一面において』
同じ形の2文をasを使って比較してみる。
前文の補語の前、後文の主語の前にasを付けて
Comedy is /as true to one side of life /as tragedy is true to another side of life.
⇒Comedy is /as true to one side of life /as tragedy is to another.
重なっている部分を省略して完成。
比較級を使った比較では
You played much better than I did. の場合は
You played well と I played well. で
You played much better than I did. となる。
両文とも主語が同じ場合の同等比較で
Comedy is true to one side of life. と Comedy is true to another side of life.
では、前文trueの前にasを後文、 comedyの前にasを付けてcomedyをitに変える。
Comedy is /as true to one side of life /as it is true to another side of life.
不必要な重複部分を省略して完成させる。
Comedy is /as true to one side of life / as to another .
『コメディは人生の一面を表し、又、他の面も表す。』
もう一つ比較級を使う形。
they enjoyed riding on his cardboard box more than on their expensive sledges.
『彼らは楽しんだ。彼の段ボール箱に乗るのを、より多く、彼らの高価なそりに乗るより』
この時にmore thanは ＞ で前の方が大きく後ろが小さい。
日本語訳は通常、後ろから訳すので、高いそりに乗るより ＜ となって、記号の向きが逆転するので、今でも気持ちが悪いのは私だけだろうか。
それはとにかくとして上記の例は
they enjoyed riding on his cardboard box much.
とthey enjoyed riding on their expensive sledges much.
をmore than で結び、
they enjoyed riding on his cardboard box more than they did on their expensive sledges.
になり、they did が消えて、
they enjoyed riding on his cardboard box more than on their expensive sledges.
で完成した文になる。
最後に
Comedy is true to life. と Tragedy is true to life. の同等比較では
Comedy is /as true to life /as tragedy is true to life. から省略されて
Comedy is /as true to life /as tragedy.
『喜劇は人生の真実を表し、悲劇も又。』で完成。
本課は同等比較と比較級を使う形で、説明が長かった。
この長い説明を著者は将来への伏線と言っている。
ただ、どんなフラグが立ったのかはよく分からない。
